Work During Studies

International students studying for a Master”s or PhD in Turkey in particular can work as researchers on academic projects related to their work to finance their studies. Some private universities also accept PhD students on full scholarships and may offer assistantships for students in return. Undergraduate students often have the opportunity to work part-time jobs, depending on their timetable.

If you plan to work during your student life, you first need to know that your student residence permit does not cover work permits alone. Therefore, if you want to work during your studies, you must first obtain a work permit. There are different types of work permits, e.g. short-term, permanent and self-employed work permits, which are issued by the Directorate General International Labour.

Opportunities for internships

As part of your university studies in Turkey, you can complete a compulsory or optional internship. These types of internships, which are usually completed during your undergraduate studies, usually take place during the summer semester. In this case, you do not need to apply for a work permit and with the support of your university you can find internships in many private companies, governmental organisations, international organisations or non-governmental organisations in Turkey.

You also have the possibility to do a 2-12 months internship in a European country during your studies in Turkey or immediately after graduation under the Erasmus+ programme, which is open to participants from all over the world. Do not forget to be in close contact with your university”s International Office for this!

If you are a student enrolled at a foreign university and plan to come to Turkey for an internship, it is good to know that you are exempt from the work permit under certain conditions.

After graduation

You shouldn”t miss the career fairs on university campuses If you want to work in Turkey after graduation. Recruiters from many important Turkish companies are present at these fairs. They provide information about their job and internship opportunities while collecting CVs from applicants who have graduated. These fairs are a great opportunity for business and internship opportunities.

In addition, many university career centres offer a range of counselling services to students, including postgraduate job announcements, interview simulation and CV writing.
